AN ITALIAN PENAL STATION.

TO BE ESTABLISHED IN THE PACIFIC. AN EXTRAORDINARY RUMOUR. By Telegraph.— Association.— (Received May 1, 10. p.m.) London, May 1. The Genoa newspaper Caffara states that Italy intends acquiring an island in Australian waters to establish a penitentiary colony for the transportation of confirmed criminals and dangerous persons hitherto condemned to solitary confinement. The same news is published in some French journals.

There are no islands in Australian waters which Italy could acquire for any purpose whatever, and it is certain that the colonies would strenuously resist the establishment in any part of the Pacific of another foreign penal station.
