FOOTBALL. ARATAPU V. WHANGAREI. The first of the Rugby Union irwtchet took" I place at Wbawgarei on Saturday, the 26th { ult., as above. The visiting team was in; I fine form, awl were a fine-looking lot of fellows. The local team were not in form, and: ! had not seen a ball this year. They have some promising young players amongst them., but this being their first match this season they really did not know where they wen;. Mr. W. H. Low and Mr. Bonella at ted as linesmen, and Mr. Hockin, once an old Whangarei footballer, but now teaching on the Wniroa, acted as referee. All of tbem gave very great satisfaction. There was a good number of spectators, but not so many as I had expected to see. as the day vras fine. The play of McGregor (representative), Harrison (representative), and Mat-tin for the Aratapn I team was particularly good. Piielan worked hard. Cox. Child*. Lendnim, Mcllhone, ! and Thompson all played well in their respecj tive places. In the Wbangarei team Wilson (representative) and Howie came out very well. Langhorn was on the ball ail the time he was playing. Clarke, C.uubie, Kccles, Dickey, Eoote, mid McC-onnack also did well for the local team. Unfortunately for Whangarei Langhorn bad his loft arm broken during the first spell. and Corkill received a nasty blow in the face during the play. Tile game resulted in a decided win for tho Aratapu team by 1* points (four tries and a. goal from a try) to 7 (a goal from tin* field and a. try). At the usual weekly meeting of the Manage* ment Committee of the Thames Rugby Union' held last evening, a letter was received from the Waihi Uugbtr Union notifying its intention of affiliating wth the Thames Union. An application was received from the Karangahako Rugby Union regarding a "rep." match with Thames, and it was decided to arrange for such a match. It was decided to write to the Canterbury Rugby Union with a view to arranging a match with their representatives in he event of their foam visiting Auckland ths season. Permission was given the True Blue Football Club to play a match with Tapu on Saturday next. FOOTBALL ROAD RACE AT WHANGAEET. [BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN COKRGSPOXDENT.] WirANGARKT, Thursday. The North Ward Football Club's road race,', Karno to Whangarei, was won by L. Cousin,, S. Iteid finishing second, and O. Kt-eles third., The distance was about 3i miles, and the time in which it was run was 19£- minutes.The second man took two minutes and the third man three minutes longer. There wad . heavy rain most of the time. PING-PONG TOIIRNAMENT. A ping-pong tournament was held at St. j Mark's Parish Hall, Eeinuera, last night; tinder the auspices of the St. Mark's Ladies' j I Guild, and subject, to the ping-pong rtrioe. . I There were 103 players and 200 spectators present. The ladies' match was won by,: Miss Millie Hesketh, who beat Miss Dargaville in the final round. The first prize for j this event was a. silver pin-tray and the second , a silver-mounted scent bottle. The gentle-; men's match was won by Mr. Ciller, who! beat Mr. Dawson in the final. Tho first' prize was an ivory date case and the second a calendar case. For the.benefit of those who could not obtain competition tickets another tournament will he held on May 20.
