Mr. Joseph G. White, who vw,.i born in Sydney in 1817, died recently in Warrnambool, Victoria. Dr. J. Malcolm Mason, chief health officer of the colony, was a passenger to New Plymouth yesterday by the Ngapuhi. The Rev. 0. A. Tisdall, M.A., who has been appointed by the Bishop of Wellington to. St. Thomas' (Anglican) Church, will not take charge until Septembei 1 next. Mr. James Enabling, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived from Wellington by the Rotoiti yesterday. Mr. Erabling will pay a short visit to Waikato, and probably to the hot springs. * • The Hon. James Carroll. ..Native Minister, is expected to arrive in Auckland this morning by the s.s. Te Anau, and will proceed to Rotorua to-day. Mr, Carrol] intends addressing the Maoris upon the new native land.legislation in the Waikato and Bay" of Island:* districts. ~ A Wellington Press: Association telegram states that Inspector Peter Pender, who is retiring from the New Zealand police force on a pension, was presented yesterday by the justices of the peace in the Wellington district with an illuminated address and a ■'-- cheque for £118, and by the citizens of Wellington with a cheque for £116. The presentations were made by the Mayor in the presence of a large number of citizens, who -warmly annhiuded His Worship's eulogistic references to Inspector Pender's fine personal record in Wellington. Last evening Mr. J. Knight, clerk .of works to the Auckland City Council, who has been granted six months' . leave of absence, and will leave shortly on a visit to England, was entertained* to a smoke concert in»the Cook-street Hall by the officials and employees of the Council, In- ' eluding invited guests, about 200 sat round the well-filled tables. The Mayor (Mr. Alfred Kidd) presided over the gathering! The town clerk (Mr. Wilson) and several members of the Council were present. The Mayor, in proposing the roast of " The Guest," said that in Mr. Knight the Council had a faithful and trustworthy servant. The city engineer (Mr. Wrigg) supplemented the remarks made by the Mayor, stating that 1 during the manv years he "had •been associated with Mr. Knight, he had found him a true friend, and one who had also been a true friend to those who had worked under him. The toast was honoured with great enthusiasm. The Mayor then -. handed to Mr. Knight a number of presents, including a very, handsome pair of field-glasses of the latest pattern, in leather case, a smoker's companion, and an antelope leather tobacco pouch, with gold shield. % On all three were engraved the name of the recipient, and a few appro- \ priate remarks expressed the esteem* in * which Mr. Knight is held by the subscribers. Mr. Knight made a feeling response. "The Mayor and Council" was ..: /. proposed by the town clerk, and responded' to by His Worship the Mayor. A capital : musical programme was presented, items '.f'.v" being contributed by the following: — " Messrs. W. Harkins, W. Steel, J. Robinson, F. P. Trevithick, H. W. .Vilson, T. Cotter, Evan, J.
