THE CANADIAN PREMIER

The Daily Chronicle states that Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Canadian Premier, is ailing, and will retire from the Premiership after the Coronation and the Intercolonial Conference. The Right Hon. Sir Wilrrid Laurior is now 60 years of age. After being called to the Bar he entered the Federal Assembly, and became Minister of the Interior and leader of rh» Liberal party. In 1896 he became Premier of Canada, being the first French-Canadian to hold the post. He was knighted at the late Queen's Diamond Jubilee. He is a fine orator and a pronounced Imperialist.
As the shooting season for native and imported game opens on Thursday next, a number of sportsmen have already arrived at Thames from Auckland (writes our Thames correspondent), and intend to locate themselves on the Piako swamp. Some of the Thames parties will leave for the Piako with the same object.
