NAVAL FUNERAL.

The remains of the seaman, Theodore Hayward, late steward to Admiral Beaumont, of the flagship Royal Arthur, were interred yesterday afternoon in tho Waikarnka Cemetery, Onehunga. The funeral cortege left Mr. C. Little's, Hobson-strect, for the Auckland railway station, where a special train was in waiting. A detachment of bluejackets were drawn up on the platform to form a guard of honour, and presented arms as the coffin passed. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack, and was surmounted w'ith several beautiful wreaths, and was borne by four of .the chief petty-officers from the hoajse to the train. Admiral Beaumont was chief mourner, and was accompanied by Captain T. P. Walker and other members of his staff. On arrival of the train at. To Papa pa station the coffin was placed on a gun-carriage and taken to the cemetery a detachment of bluejackets following. Tho funeral procession was headed by the band of H.M.s. Royal Arthur, which played the "Dead March" in "Saul." The cortege was met by the Rev. F. A. Sims, chaplain of the Royal Arthur, who read the committal service at the grave, and by the Rev. Canon Haseldon, vicar of St. Peter's, Onehunga, who read the Scripturo lessons. The usual three volleys were iircd over the grave at the conclusion of the interment by a tiring party of 18 bluejackets. The deceased was buried in the Anglican portion of tho cemetery. Deceased, who was 41 yeara of ago, leaves a wife and family at Portsmouth, in England, and had been for 14 years steward to Admiral Beaumont. Amongst those who paid a last mark of respect to the deceased were Messrs. J. W. Allen (Northeotc), L. J. Clements (Kaipara Flats), W. G. Garrard, and Adam Ayles (naval veterans), H. H. Share (Admiral's secretary), Commander Power, Lieutenant P. V. Oliver, Midshipman Airdley Wilmott (Royal Arthur), and Gunner Sims (Ringarooma). Wreaths were placed on the coffin from Government Home (an anchor), G. Shiltock (Government House). Admiral Beaumont, Mr. and Mr?. Bryce (Wellington), captain and wardroom stewards H.M.s. Ringarooma, lady BurwrirtQiident and nurses Auckland Hospital (cross), patients No. 2 ward (hospital), warrant officers of Royal Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. C. Bishop, deceaseds messmates, Mrs. Brain, ship's company, and chief petty-officer Royal Arthur. Admiral Beaumont, who held tho deceased in warm regard, exhibited great thoughtfulness in attending to the arrangements for the interment. He visited O'Neill's Point Cemetery but was not satisfied with this spot, and decided that the body should bo interred in the Waikaraka Cemetery, bearing the extra expense himself.
