AUCKLAND SHAREMARKET. The market was quiet yesterday. In investment lines business was done in Kauri Timbers, contributing, at Is 4d, and D.S.C.'s at 9s Id. Other stocks were quoted at late rates. : ; ';;■:' In mining . lines '.} Kuranuis sold at sd, and Maratotos at 3d. Waihi Grand Junctions firmed a shade, with sales at 335, late buyers offering 32s 6d, with sellers asking 355. f Crowns were easier at 10s 9d, buyers offering 10s 3d. Buyers of Waihis quoted \at £5 • 18s 6d, : ; sellers £6 ■;; 3s; 6d. Talismans improved a shade, with buyers at 16s 6d, no sellers quoting. In other lines late prices ruled. THE GOLD RETURNS. TOTAL FOR THREE WEEKS, £12,933. OUTPUT FOR 1901, £758,600. A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. During tha past three weeks remainder of tie gold returns required to complete the total for 1901, have, come to hand, and amount to £12,933 14s 6d. This brings the total output for the past year to £758,600 14s lid;-an amount which exceeds the total for 1900 by ; £123,566 15s Bd, and compared with the year 1899 (which, with a gross output of £641,150;. the record for many years past) shows an increase of £117,440. ■ The various goldfields have contributed to the total for 1901 as follows :—Ohinemuri, £635,004 17s 2d ; Thames, £54,504 2s 8d ; Coromandel, £69,091 - 15s ; Id. Compared with the year 1900, Ohinemuri shows an increase of £143,284 10s 6d, Coromandel an increase of £7491 5s sd, and Thames a decrease of £27,209 0s 3d. 4; Full details of the returns, both I for the past three weeks and for the year just ended, together with a complete review of the operations carried out on the Auckland goldfields during 1901, appear in the Herald Summary published with this issue. . i NEW ALPHA G.M. CO. In the New Alpha Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waitekauri, the drive going north on the reef from the crosscut has been advanced a further 10ft. The band of c6-l-cite is apparently dying out, and the footwall portion of the lode is again converging towards the other section of the reef, and should form into a strong body of ore in a few more feet of driving. The chances of an improvement in the value of the ore are good.

. THAMES SCHOOL OF MINES. (BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] \ ; 'Thames, 5 Wednesday. At a special meeting of the Thames School of Mines Council, Mr. Geo. Denby presiding, it was'stated that the electrical classes could not be started at the opening of the School of Mines session. Regarding the appointment of an electrical expert it was stated that \ a suitable man had presented himself to the director, and Mr. Allen stated that his qualifications were satisfactory, also that he wished tc proceed with ; a special course of studies in electro-chemistry. It was decided tc select the applicant (Mr. Wright) and recommend the Minister for Mines to appoint him to the position. It was decided that the Special Committee should act in connection with the installation of the electrical plant. .Re the examination it was decided to issue the certificates in 'accordance with the recommendation of the director ; of the school. In connection with the Thames School of Mines examination the president's medal for the best all-round student was won by Mr. C. A. Banks with an aggregate of 931 marks. This gjves the good average of 77.67 for 12 subjects, in 11 of which.'.i he secured first-class certificates. He also came second in the School of Mines scholarship examination, which was won by a Coromandel student (Mr. Fraser). . DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.
