CHARGE OF PERJURY AND CONSPIRACY.
Yesterday morning, at the Police .Court, • \v/ before Mr, Thomas Hutchison, S.M., th® six men, Roger, Wilfred, arid Percy Lupton, Alfred Jones, Ernest Swarm, and Ernest Norman, who were arrested on the previous evening, appeared to' answer two charges pre-3|§®s| ferred against thorn, namely, . that they' did,;' on or about October 2 of last year,' conspire to prevent the course Vof -justice, and that • they did on the same date commit perjury. The prosecution was represented by Mr. J. C. Martin, and Mr. Bailey (instructed by. Mr. ' • J. R. Reed) appeared for the accused. In briefly explaining the facts of the"case, - > ■. Mr. Martin said that the present proceedings ' originated from a civil case heard at ■ the Magistrate's Court, Auckland,,' in wliich accused were connected with the plaintiff's --'.3$ side, when it was alleged . the offences were committed. He went on to say that the ' charges were very serious ones, and their hearing, ho said, would probably occupy tho . • attention of the Court practically tho whole of one day. In order that the prosecution ,\X may. have the necessary time i.u which to pre- - ppare the necessary evidence, he would apply for a remand till Friday next. ' The Bench ■ . agreed to this. ' Bail was allowed the accuscd, each in. one . y surety of . £50.
