[WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. ■'1 ■' '•v' 7 : V-V''V' ; :■// ST. MICHAEL "WINS THE CUP. : [BY TELEGRATH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington-, Tuesday. The summer, meeting of tho Wellington Racing Club opened to-day. Light showers fell early in the morning, but by nine o'clock tho weather cleared, though a disagreeable ' strong nor'-wester ... continued throughout the day. The attendance . was only fair, not more than. 3000 being present, and speculation in the totalisators was dull. The bookmakers, who vere present in numbers, appeared to be doing thriving business. Last year, when the first day opened on a holiday, £16,743 was handled by the totalisators, but to-day only £9043 went through. The following are the results:— ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP of 150sovs; ; second horse 20sovs from the stakes: One mile. 224— (F. Queen's Guard and Goldenmere were tie first away, but being steadied Quiltina and Torowai went on in front, and on entering the back stretch were joined by Indian Shot, tho other three racing abreast a length away. No change in position took place until Hearing the road, where Fleka joined the loading division, but as the turn to the straight was reached Queen's Guard shot to the front and Goldenmero came with t strong run from the last position. With a high wind behind them the field came t down the straight at a ofreat bat, but Queen's Guard held her own all the way and won by about half-a-length, Fleka being a fair third and Torowai fourth. ' The quartette moved away together as the barrier lifted, and Melwood's • colours were first to show prominently, with the others in a bunch. Passing tho stand Melwood held a slight advantage ■ from ' St. Michael, after whom came The Shannon. The favourite went to the front as they left the i straight and held a couple of lengths' lead as the back stretch was entered, with Shannon and Melwood racing together and Can-: nie Chiel a length further away. As the field approached the home bend The Shannon drew away from Melwood and lessened tho gap between her and the leader, but it was only on sufferance, the favourite coming away again as they turned for home and won without effort by < four lengths. Melwood challenged ■ The Shannon in the straight and a good set-to to tho post resulted in the mare gaining second money by half-a-length. Cannie Chiel was close up fourth. Time, 2m. 38 l-ss.
