AUCKLAND FRUIT INDUSTRY.
ENORMOUS OUTPUT. The present season has been an especially favourable one for fruit, and during the past few weeks an enormous quantity has been received in town from all the country districts. As showing the extent of this industry, Mr. A. Tooman, the well-known, auctioneer, of Queen-street, has compiled a return, giving the output of the Auckland orchards for five days (from January 13 _to January 18, both days inclusive), which amounted to 23,384 cases. The returns are made up as foliows: — There were sent to and sold by the various Auckland auctioneers, 11,638 cases; sent by growers to local jam factories, 750 cases; supplied direct to shopkeepers by growers, 463 cases; shipped to the South, via the East Coast, by growers, 5354- cases; shipped from .Onehunga to West Coast and Southern ports, 5179 cases: total, 23,384 cases. In addition the local product supplies were augmented during the same five days by 5223 bunches of bananas from Fiji, 60 cases of assorted fruit from Sydney, and 383 cases of oranges from San Francisco. According to the return, Auckland's consumption of fruit is shown at 18,457 packages, including imported varieties.
