Deciduous > fruits amounted to less than; those of the preceding season, the quantity ;;up to Sep-, tember 1 having been 42,015 carloads, >. as I compared with 47,081 for the corresponding . • period of 1899-1900, and the cars contained ' 12 tons this season, against 13 tons for the earlier one. The falling-off was in cherries, - early peaches, and apricots. :. => - •.-" - '.■/'' Although the present ; generation owes ". much to science it is.impossible to be-too knowing. v For instance, it is \ deelured that late in the season some not too honest gardeners plant, a crop of late keeping potatoes, which yield'small tubers before the advent . ,'" of frost. This crop is dug and buried in ' -heaps in the, open field and left until spring, when: the heaps are opened and the potatoes sorted according ;to their size. A large .;■'"■-'" kettle or vat is then-made ready by filling •with: boiling water, to which is added a • little lye.- The skin of any potato;' no matter how old, dipped in this boiling. lye solution cracks, curls, and so closely resembles that of a new potato. that it would be hard to pick out the impostor from a basket of the genuine article. After dipping the potatoes are rinsed and spread out to try in the sun, and sold as new tubers. ,''.."' i Holiday suits from 18s 6d; men s suits and trousers in all sizes and prices, , at treo.
