POLICE PROTECTION FOR ONEHUNGA.

! At the meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council last night the following resolution, adopted at a meeting of the Onehunga Tradesmen's Association, was received: — "That this association respectfully requests your Council to urge the Government to appoint a third constable at Onehunga, believing, as it does, thai; the present st.-iff is quite inadequate for the protection of public safety, especially at night."■ The Mayor stated : that he had made inquires as to the amount of police protection provided in other towns in the colony about the same size as Onehunga, with the result that he found that Onehunga was considerably undermanned. He instanced the following places, giving tho population and number of policemen, viz.: Wanganui, population 7329, cue sergeant,, one detective, and 10 constables; New Plymouth, population 4405, one sergeant and five constables; Palmerston, population 6534, one sergeant and five constables; Hastings, population 3650, one 'sergeant and two constables; Gisborne. population 2737, one sergeant, one detective, and five constables; 1 Onehunga, population 3015, two constables. There is also a population of 2000 on the outskirts of Onehunga, has to be protected by the two constables in the .borough,, thus making a total of 5015 persons under the supervision of two constables. The Mayor also reminded the Council that the shipping at Onehunga is steadily increasing. r :: Steamers are coming from and going South almost daily. As ono constable had to attend the arrival and departure of all these vessels, it would be seen that nearly the whole of his time was spent on the wharf. Senior-Constable Tapp was largely, occupied in clerical work, he being clerk of the S.M. Court, clerk to the Licensing. Committee, and deputy-registrar of old age pensions.. . Considering the above facts, and remembering the number of burglaries and attempted robberies that had occurred in Onehunga, he (the Mayor) felt that the tradesmen had acted wisely in taking the matter up, and it was the duty of.the Council to - second their ; efforts in endeavouring to obtain increased police protection in Onehunga. It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of tho Mayor and Mr. ■ Rowe, with power to act.

" This summer there has been an almost entire absence in the Wairarapa ■of that dreaded pest, the bot-fly. Various reasons have been set forth as the probable cause of this. The general opinion seems to be that a wet * season is the only one favourable to the bot-fly. The weather during ; the last few, months has been , exceedingly dry, and this f probably accounts for the non-appearance of the pest. • y Since January last the consumption of tea in Great Britain has exceeded that during the same period of last year by 5,000,0001b.
