THE BOER WAR.
PROGRESS OF THE CAMPAIGN. THE SCOTS GREYS ATTACKED. ~ . . .■' SIX KILLED. ' ' GENERAL BRUCE HAMILTON'S SUCCESSES. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received January 7, 1.8 a.m.) London, January 6. A pasty of Scots Greys had a sharp encounter at Bronkhort's Spruit. The "Boers allowed the advance guard to pass and. then attacked the left flank. Six of the Greys were killed and 13 wounded. After a twohours' fight the Boers retired. General Bruce Hamilton's columns crossed the flooded Vaal River on pontoons and pursued the enemy in a thick mist and steady rain, capturing many without , firing a shot. They were, however, compelled to give up the pursuit and return to a distant depot in order to reprovision and get fresh horses. Otherwise they would have secured more successes. / ■.* * ■ The Boers in the Eastern Transvaal try to keep 25 miles ahead of the columns. The Times says that a continuous wearing-down process ought to be maintained in South Africa by keeping the advance depots well supplied. More men and horses are required; also light railways along the lines of the blockhouses.
