Mr. F. W. Uttin-c; returned from the Islands by the Bauroto yesterday. . Mr. Houghton, late of the Uunedin office, is now assistant purser on the Tahirie. Mr. .John Kemp, of Hampton (E.), has ■been appointed city engineer of Brisbane Mr. K. J. Hill, one of Wellington's most popular vocalists, arrived in Auckland yesterday on a holiday tour. . Mr. \\. Mclntyre is at present acting as chief engineer of the Hanruto, Mr. Urqtihart having remained behind at Sydney owing to indisposition. Mr. Barnett, purser of the Walk are. has been granted holiday leave, which be intends spending in Melbourne. Mr. Mulqueen, late purser of the Taluue. whose leave of absence has expired, will take up his duties on the Waikare.
Mr. Harry Richards, the well-known theatrical entrepreneur, leftSydnev on Wednesday for the United States via Auckland. Mr. P. R. Dix, of the Gaiety Company, will meet him in Auckland, for the purpose of arranging for the visit of new artists to this colony. Mr. J. Ethridge, R.N.R., third officer of the Tarawera, TTus married- last week at Lyttelton, and as a- wedding gift the captain and officers of the Tarawerr presented him with a handsome marble clock. At a well-attended meeting of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church, Waikouaiti, held on the 7th inst., and presided over by the JRev. A. M. Fiulayson, it was unanimously decided to give a" call to the Rev. J. J. Cairney. at present acting as locum tenens for the Rev. Mr. Macnicol, at St. James' Presbyterian Church, Auckland.
On Wednesday evening, 25th ult., a very pleasant and enjoyable ♦'unction took place at Whitelev Hall, New Plymouth, when Mr. and Mrs. Collis. sen., were " farewelled" before leaving the district. The gathering was also in celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Collis' golden wedding, and the couple received many congratulations on the event. Among those present were ti«e Rev. S. J. Serpell, who presided, the Rev. W. CanBell, Messrs. J. Asher, Joseph White, S. B. White, and others. During the evening Mr. E. Okey, in appropriate terms, presented Mr. Collis with a purse of sovereigns, subscribed by the congregation of the Wesleyaa Church, and the recipient feelingly responded, expressing his regret at leaving old friends in this district. Mr. W. Skinner eulogised the good work of Mr. Collis outside his own church, especially with regard to the Mutual Improvement Society, which was for some time in existence there. Songs and instrumental items were contributed during the evening, and a. light supper was handed round towards the close. "here was great regret expressed 011 every hand at Mr. and Mrs. Collis' departure, and they received the hearty good wishes of all for their future welfare. On Monday, 30lh ult., there was a pleasant withering of old and young friends at th- residence, in Vivian-street, New Plymouth, of Mr. and Mrs. Collis, sen., when their youngest daughter, Emily May (Emmie) was married to Mr. Frank A. S. Carlisle, of Wanganui, the Rev. S. J. Serpell officiating. After the ceremony, and the playing of the " Wedding March" by Miss Maggie Collis, niece of the bride, the company, taking advantage of tie lovely weather, occupied the sheltered lawn in front of the house for afternoon tea, where several groups were successfully E holographed by Mr. W. A. Collis. A number of handsome and useful presents were prettily laid out in a decorated alcove and duly admired. The bride and bridegroom left for Wanganui, their future home, amid the cheery congratulations and ki*d wishes of their assembled friends.
