VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB'S MEETING.
THE SECOND DAY'S RACING.

Melbourne, October 16. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club held the second day's racing in connection with their spring meeting to-day at Caulfield, under more favourable circumstances than on the opening day. The weather, which had been cold and showery in the early morning, cleared towards noon, and His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun. accompanied by Lady Ilopetoun, arrived in good time to witness the first race. There was a large attendance, and the lawn presented a picture, the ladies being in large force, displaying costumes which the miserable weather on Saturday prevented. Special interest centred in. the Eclipse Stakes and Coongy Handicap, in which a numbe. of Cup horses were engaged. Haymaker was installed favourite for the Eclipse Stakes, but ho took no pert in the finish, which was left to Bonnie Chiel and Hymcttus, the first-named winning an exciting race by a head. A fine field ot 22 was saddled up for the Cocngy Handicap, for which event the four-year-old Juggler was strongly backed, leaving off favourite at 7 to 2. The position proved to be accurately gauged, for the son of Strathmore shot out in the straight and won hi'-, race at the right end.

Other quotations are 9 to 1 Hymettus, 100 to 10 Grasspan and Bonnie Chiel, 100 to 6 George Frederick, Flagship, and Rock Gun, 100 to 5 Combat and Caledonia, 100 to 4 Vocalist, Warrior, Lucknow, and Cretonne. Later. Tliero was very little betting on the Caulfield Cup either at the rooms or oil the course. The latest quotations are: — 4 to 1 agst Wakeful 6 to 1 Hymottus 8 to 1 Bonnie Chiel 10 to 1 Juegler and Grasspan. Aoetino (clothed) coversa a round on the tan in 2tru 40s.
