The American mail steamer Sonoma, Captain K. Van Otterendorp, arrived from. San Francisco, Honolulu, and Pago Pago ore the ; 9th July, and left for Sydney early next I morning. The steamer left San Francisco on June 20 at 10.20 a.m., and reached Honolulu at 2 p.m. on thu 26th. Left the nest day, and arrived at Pago Pago on July 3 at 4.14 p.m., and departed for Auckland at 6.48 p.m. Passed the Little Barrier at 6.30 a.m. on July 9, had Tiritiri abeam at 8.30, and arrived as above. Experienced light variable winds, with smooth seas and fine weather to Honolulu, thence to Pago Pago moderate northeast to south-east . trades with, considerable south-westerly swell; from there to arrival fresh variable winds with heavy south-westerly swell. It was intended that the necessary repairs to the Sonoma's engines should be made during her stay at San Francisco, but owing to the machinists' strike it was found imposI sible to overhaul the engines as completely as was at first contemplated. : Ten engineers were engaged to carry out the repairs, but only five appeared, and they were called off at noon the same day on account of the strike. If it is thought advisable, more complete repairs will be made at Sydney.
