.":': —; ~*~ : " ...■■.... SPLENDID MAIL NUMBER. FIFTY LARGE ILLUSTRATIONS. RETURNED ;TROOPERS' RECEPTION. WHALING OFF NORTH AUCKLAND. SNOW SCENES IN THE SOUTH. THE GREAT SYDNEY FIRE. THE NEW ISLAND SCHOONER. - . SOUTH AFRICAN VIEWS, MISCELLANEOUS PICTURES. The present ~ issue of the Auckland Weekly News contains a large number of unusually interesting illustrations, which .will directly appeal to all classes of people. Whaling at Whangamumu, in North Auckland, ■is remarkably • well depicted. The Weekly News photographer has succeeded in obtaining representative (pictures of the whole industry. The whaleboats are seen, with harnooner in bow, ready to strike ; the whale itself is shown tangled in the great nets, and in another, scene spouting in its death agony. Features of the whaling station in Whangamumu Harbour, and the process of cutting up blubber, together with carcases of whales, are shown, and altogether a most excellent idea is given of the whole strange industiy. Auckland's reception of the returned troopers, groups of the troopers themselves as seen in New Zealand and South Africa, and the honours shown to the late Gunner Cendall, make a series of illustrations interesting alike to volunteers and to their friends. The recent great snowstorms in Christchurch and Wanganui are well depicted, and form illustrations such as the people of the sunny North rarely see. The great fire in Sydney, which resulted in the destruction of Anthony Hordern and Sons' premises, is reproduced in a most striking manner. The big warehouses and shops are shown as they appeared when the fire was at its height. The launching of the Island schooner Countess of Ranfurly, the recent landslip at the Crown mine, together with a number of interesting ' groups and portraits, make up an issue widely interesting to people here, and admirably adapted for sending abroad. The present number of the Auckland Weekly News is now on sale, and can be obtained from all agents and runners. -
