SCENERY CONSERVATION SOCIETY.

The second annual report of the Auckland ;Scenery, Conservation Society has been issued. ;> The committee state that though I the progress of the society during the ' year I had not '; been "', as great ; as oould have been . wished, some things -had been, .achieved, and it was hoped by continuing to exert the influence of the society to gradually obtain full recognition and support towards its avowed objects. In the Domain a number of pine trees, which were spoiling good native trees, had been cut down, the society contributing towards the cost. ; Much, however, remained to be done in this direction, as well as in planting native trees to fill the gaps where the 5 bush was sparse. The finances of the Domain trust had been placed in a bettor position, a sum of about £1200 having been placed to its credit in restitution of former overcharges, thus; changing , a deficiency of £800 to a credit of £400 approximately in the half-year ending September 30 last. The committee did not consider that an adequate amount had yet been restored to the Domain account to compensate for the overcharges v/hioh had been mado since the City Council became the trustees, but' for so much as had been done they thought they might fairly olaim that their remonstrances and analyses of the 'accounts, combined with those of the Ratepayers* Association, had assisted the late Mayor in his endeavours to have, justice idone, to the/ Domain. The society had in a measure been the means of having native cabbage trees and other sightly trees planted in various streets and reserves about Auckland, and were the intermediaries for the presentation of , a marble statue of a fisher maiden from Mr. W- Parkinson, upon the condition that it should be erected in the Albert Park. With regard to future works, the committee hoped to see those works finished that ' had been begun under the auspices of the society; to assist in effecting some more improvements in the Domain, and to commence the improvement of two places in particular, which wore at present neglected and 'unsightly, viz., the lowei part of Albert '• Park, near Bowon Avenue, and the triangle in Newmarket, at the junction of Khyber Pass and Manukau Road. These last items would be beyond the nowoi of the society alone, but the committee hoped to obtain the assistance of residents in the vicinity and others specially interested, and of the local authorities, as had been done with such good results by the sister society in Dunedin. > The statement of accounts showed receipts to be £114- 8s Bel, and expenditure £65 12s lid, leaving a credit balance of £48 15s 9d. The amount spent' on actual improvements was £41 6s lOd, of which £31 Is lOd was on tree-planting in Jervois Road. - : 7. :
