WHALING IN THE NORTH.

POUR WHALES TAKEN IN ONE DAY. MESSRS. Ko.s.s AND Ansf.NNK yesterday received a telegram from Russell stating that whaling operations at Whangamumu were proceeding very successfully, no fewer than four large whales being captured and towed into the, whaling station on Wednesday. This makes a catch of five, whales for the season so far, which is a larger take up to date than any previous season, so that there is every prospect that the operations tins year will be much better than those (if any previous year. The steam launch Waiwiri, which was recently built in Auckland, and taken to Whangamumu for the purpose of towing the captured whales into the station, is proving herself a very handy craft, and the telegram to Messrs. Ross and Anserine states that it, was owing to the launch being available that such a good catch was secured on Wednesday last.
