POLITICAL RUMOURS.
A correspondent at Wellington writes giving certain rumours and reports thai- are j current there respecting the future career of j the Premier. This, of course, is of more j than personal importance, for if he were i to leave the lie'd of politics there would be j many changes in the position. The writer j referred to rays : " Mr. Seddon has received I no honours in connection with the visit of 1 the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and j York. Those who are supposed to know i his mind say that he considers a mere j knighthood far beneath his acceptance, and j hint darkly at a peerage. For my part, [ | do not see how that is to come about. | Baron Kiima.ro. would sound all right, no j doubt. Hut the British Government cannot | confer life peerages except in the case of j certain law lords. As to his being ap- j pointed Governor of Fiji, that is oat of the I question, as In; has put himself at the head I of a. faction in Fiji. There are a variety of : speculations as to the future of the Pre- ! mier, and I may rise the rather vague phrase that they are all more or less well authenti- I rated. Some v ill have it that he intends j to go to Engl ind as Agent-General, and that I he will at the same time lloat the Bank of | New Zealand into a great English company, interesting in it some of the largest London financiers. Also, that in the session which i is now upon, us he will put through a measure, settling all claims of the Midland rait- ! way, and put the finishing touches to the arrangement in London. There are others | who tbink that Mr. Seddon's ambition is to j become a member of the great Imperial j Council which is to be formed. That j would be composed of the Secretary of Stale i for the Colonies, of some of the law- lords, ! and of representatives of the colonies. The j members of this Council would hold a high ] position, and would receive corresponding j salaries. These are all current reports. A very short time will show how much there is in them "
