BOWLING.
The contest between the Newmarket and Mount Eden Club, on the Newmarket Green j !a-< Saturday ins one of th-> mo.-l remarkable eon tests fiiiieh has. taken place on th.it giceti The war of the elements which prevailed show what bowlers will endure in pursuit of tho game, which on Saturday was certainly "under difficult i"-." It was anybody's game even to ihe last rink and the la.st head, and the men in lie- other four rinks crowded on the ban!; in the drenching squall to see the finish between the two skips, Messrs;. Brimbleeembo and K.ilgour. It was a grand game, and. next to winning the game, was the honour of losing it to such victors. Tlie Newmarket men cheered and cheered again on seeing that victory was with the home team. Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. have pre scnted, on behalf of the D.C.L., a pair of silver-mounted bowls to the Devonport Club for competition. Five rinks from Devonport visit the Auckland Green en the 11th inst. An interesting and exciting game was played on Thursday afternoon on the Grafton I Green, when the holders of the challenge gold buckles were again called upon to defend their trophies. " The challengers were Dr. Kin" (the popular secretary of the Auckland Bowling Club), L. Moritzsou, W. Butt, and W. Lyons (skip), and the defenders W. Culpa!) (the "lucky skip") and his team of Scotchmen, viz., Mennie. McCallum, and Perrett. Lvons got away with a lead, being 10 to 2 on the ninth head, and looked a likely winner, but the "Scotties" crept up till the score was 15 all on the 20th head. _ On the last head the challengers were lying shot, when the skips went down to play, but, Culpan played a classical shot, and lay. Lyons ; responded with a better one, lying shot. Cub pan then "ran through." and again lay shot; with his last bowl Lyons drove, sending the jnciC into tho ditch, but a fortunate "back one" of Perrett's scored and won the match for Culpan's team. Tins makes the fifth consecutive buckle match this team has won, and so far they are unbeaten. The Melbourne Leader of April 20 says re the Home visiting team:—On Monday al>out 20 members of the first Australasian bowlinr team arrived from New Zealand and Sydney by the Steamship Omrah, on their way to London. They were entertained by the M.C.C. in their rinks during the afternoon, and a friendly game was played, resulting in tho M.C.C. scoring 116 points to a, response of 110 by the visiting bowlers. Tho green was in capital order, and Messrs. Warddl and Gordon, as usual, were untiring in their efforts to make the visitors enjoy their slay on the M.C.C. rinks. A good number of onlookers were in attendance, and around fho rinks the play of tho Now Zealanders was much admired. On the M.C.C. green Messrs, Paul and Bal linger, the two New Zealand captains, gave a capital exhibition of driving, as well as all-round play. The M.C.C. players proved altogether too strong for the Sydney bowlers. It is quito evident that Victoria and New Zealand are sending forward the strongest players. The two rinks opposed to New Zealand on the M.C.C. rinks could not hold a candle to the Maorilanders. Ballinger quite nonplussed Boyle. On one occasion, when the latter was laying two shots. Ballinger drove them both out very cleanly, and eventually scored seven in the end, following it tip with a, five. Boylo was all at sea when opposed to Ballinger. Paul met a good player in Hay ward, but the latter got poor support from his men, and Paul's team, playing together like clockwork, gave Hayward a busy time. Ho made a stubborn fight, but Paul won easily, scoring 25 to 12. Jack.
