The first meeting of the Arawa Maori Council, elected under the provisions of the Maori Councils Act, 1900, was held in the Tamatekapua, Ohinemutu, yesterday. Cap- ■ tain Gilbert Mair, the gazetted officer for the district under the Act, presided. All the members of the Council, 12 in number, were present. Raureti Paerawau, the East Coast chief, was elected chairman. Sanitation committees for the villages of Ohinemutu and Whakarewarewa were appointed, end several by-laws for the prevention of the sale or importation of spirits I in the native villages were recommended for the Governor's approval. The Act gives the natives very large powers of self-government, and will., it is expected, prove very beneficial in its operations.
