PRESENTATION TO MR. C. E. BUTTON.

'.An enthusiastic meeting was held in the Gladstone Hall, Norllicote, last night lor the purpose of making a presentation to Mr. C. E. Button in recognition of his many cervices to the Borough of Birkenhead. Mr. ' J. H. Witheford, Mayor of Birkenhead, oe- . cupied the chair. The meeting opened with some musical selections. The Chairman then invited Mr. Button on to the platform, and called for three cheers foi Mr. Button, which Were heartily given. The Chairman then gave a sho.-t address, referring to the fact, that Mr. Button had lived for 15 years in tho district. He went on to speak of Mr. Button's kindly nature and his desire to promote tho welfare of his fellow men, which entitled him to grateful recognition. Tho fact that ho had been Mayor for 13 consecutive years showed that the people appreciated hit, many good qualities. -The Chairman then presented Mr. Button with the following address: —"We, tho residents of the Borough of Birkenhead, beg to tender, on the occasion of your retirement from the position of Mayor after a tenure ot 13 consecutive years, our keen appreciation of your efforts for the welfare and prosperity of tho borough, and to assure you that your zeal and exertions in this direction will ovei be held by us in grateful remembrance. Trusting you will long bo spared to enjoy health and prospcruy in the borough in which your services have been so prominent, wo remain, dear, sir, on behalf of the residents, yours faithfully (then follow the signatures of the present Mayor, councillors, and town clerk). Mi Button, in reply, said it was a pleasure tc know that he had been, of service to the district.' Ho had been amply repaid for what he had done. He also thanked Mr. Withetord for his kind words. ' After a song and a recitation the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
