THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
The election of Municipal Councils in Auckland City and in Grey Lynn, Parnell, Devonport, and Birkenhead Boroughs takes place to-day. Mayors also fall to bo elected today for Auckland City and Grey Lynn Borough. The polling in all cases is from nine a.m. till seven p.m. the OUT election. One special feature in connection with the f>ity election i; that this will bo the first municipal election in which the one-muii-one-voto principle has been put in force in its entirety, and the attention of voters is specially called to the fact that, though their names may appear on more than one roll, they can only vote in one ward. Tlio candidates for the Mayoralty are Dr. J. Logan Campbell and Mr. D. Arkoll. i For seats on the Council three wards are contested, viz.. South, Ponsonby, and Grafton. In the South Ward the five candidates for three seats are: Messrs. 11. Fan-ell, .1. T. Julian, 11. Tudehope, A. E. Glover, and A. Boasor. The polling place is St. Janus?' Hall. In Ponsonby Ward there are fontcandidates for three Beats, viz., Messrs. John Court, O. J. Parr, James Slichburv, and Joseph Becroft. The polling place is I'jonsonby Hall. Grafton Ward has five candidates for three seats, viz.. Messrs. ,1. ;W. Hewson, James Jamioson. John Patterson, Maurice Casey, and H. T. Garratt. The polling piece is St. Benedict's Hall. A poll for tho election of Mayor will be taken in all the wards. Whore the ward election is being contested both polls will be taken in tin same hall. Following are tho polling places for tho Mayoral election: — East Ward : The Hospital and Charitable Aid Beard Of/ice. Chancery-street. North Ward: The Central Mission Hall, Albert-street, South Ward: St. James' Hall, at back, Wel-lington-sheet. Ponsonbj Ward: The Ponsonby Hall, at back. Jervois Road. Grafton Ward: St. Benedict's Hall, at back, Glad-stone-street.
GREY LYNN. Messrs. R. T. Warnock and J. W. .Shackelford contest the Mayoralty of Grey Lynn. There 13 also a keen contest for seats on the Council. For Surrey Ward there are six candidates for three seats, viz., Messrs. William Brineden, William Walter Dumper, Arthur James Parker, John Roaser, William Sydney Smith, and William White.. A poll will bo taken at St. George's Hi'll, Great North Road. For Sussex Ward Messrs. John Farrell, Robert Charles Foster, Robert Hall, and James Henry Muldoon are candidates for the three seats. A poll' will be taken at.the Council Chambers, Iloso Road. For the three seats in Richmond Ward there are tho following six candidates:—Messrs. Thomas Billington, Thomas Booth, Alexander Donald, James Frater, Charles McMaster, and Charles Morley. A poll will be taken at the Primitive Methodist schoolhouse, Richmond Road. FARNELL. Foi nine seats on the Para ell Council the following 10 candidates are in the field: — Messrs. R. S. Briggs, C, J. Brook, George Cozens, John Fitl, James Gilmour, C. E. MacCormick, John McCabe, John Petford, H. C. Tewsley, and William Thomas. The polling place is tho Borough Council Chambers. ■, DEVONPORT. Dovonport has 12 candidates from whom to select nine councillors. The candidates are: Messrs. E. W. Alison, H. J. Baulf, E. D, Benjamin, R. H. Duder, James Dunning, William Handley, J. W. Harrison, R. Logan, inn., F. E. Mason. W. J. W. Philson, J. M. Syms, and J. A. Walker. The polling place is the Borough Council Chambers. BIRKENHEAD. At Birkenhead there are 13 candidates for nine seats on the Council. The candidates are:' Messrs. William Wallace, C. J. Shaw, Henry Day, Tom Hadfiold, D. M. Heron. E. J. White, Harold Frith, -Tohn Hadfield, William Thompson, Alexander Keyoa, H. P. Taylor, J. G. Kay, and Patrick Donahoe. The polling place is Zion Hill schoolroom. ONEHUNGA. Interest in the Onehunga municipal election, which takes place to-day, is very keen, and strenuous efforts are being made by both parties to capture a majority of seats on the Council. There are two candidates for the Mayoralty, namely, Mr. Donald A. Sutherland and Mrs. Elizabeth Yat,os, and 110 lets than 1.5 for the Council, namely,, Mrs. Elizabeth Yates, Messrs. W. Colledge, C. V. Hill, C. McLeod, J. J. Shaldrick, J. Rowe (members of the present Council), J. D. Jackson, J. Nixon, J. Stoupo, G. Vause (ox-councillors), J. E. Kelsall, J. N. Ris'mvorth, W. Morton, sen., W. Tole, and F. Walker (new men). Mr. W. H. Edwards, another member of the present Council, was also nominated, but lie has retired from the contest. Last night Mrs. Yates addressed a crowded meeting in the Public Hall; Mr. J. D. Jackson presided. Mrs. Yates spoke for ov<r an hour, during which she severely Criticised the work of the present Council. The meeting was one of the liveliest ever held in Onehunga, and a good deal of the speaker's time was occupied in replying to interruptions from tie audience. The election will take place in the town clerk's office, from nine a.m. to seven p.m.
