ATHLETIC NOTES.

NORTHERN WAIROA CRICKET. \ AN interesting game of cricket waft played ; at Mangawhare on Wednesday afternoon, when a charge was made for admission to the ground as a benefit to- the men injured - in the fire which destroyed the Kaihu Hotel. The sides wera chosen from amongst the' elderly men of Mangawhare and Dargaville.V and one of the ; features of the game was the surprising agility of several of our veterans. They were not slow in moving between tire wickets or chasing a ball. Want of wind was much more conspicuous i than any stiffness of limbs, i There were one or i two ex- :'■■•■■.'"■.• ceptions, of course. The most successful batsmen were Messrs. R. A. Cook, P. .Little, and P. F.Day,, and amongst those who were superior in fielding were Messrs. J. A. Broramono, A.-iSield, J. Walters, and others. Mr.. W - , A. Mamner was successful with his ; underhand bowling. A pleasant, happy time , was spent, and the ladies added much to the enjoyment by their presence, and by supplyin* tea and i cakes during the j afternoon, here was ,a_ pretty good attendance of the ' • general public—[Own Correspondent,]
