UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the University College Council was held yesterday afternoon at the University Buildings. There were present: Sir Geo. M. O'Rorke (chairman), the Primato (Bishop Cowie), Hon. J. A. Tole, Rev. W. J. Williams, and Messrs. L. Bagn'all, F. E. Baume, T. U. Wells and Jackson Palmer. Correspondence: The Auckland Choral Society wrote enclosing an account lor charges incurred in connection with the appointment of Dr. W. E. Thomas, and stating that the committee wished to draw attention to the fact that the total amount agreed to be paid by the society was i,dH towards the passage money of the conductor. The matter was referred to the chairman and Mr. Tole for a report. Air. E. Do Montalk, lecturer on modern languages, wrote requesting permission to establish at the college a French Literary .Society on the same, lines and in the same condition as the Korero Club. Granted. Professorial Board: The report of 1 rofessoi Thomas, chairman of the Professorial Board, as to whether the University GoKegc can take advantage of the provisions of ti:c Manual and Technical Instruction Act, stated that technical instruction in many subjects was already given in the college, but many of the subjects were grouped together in the existing college classes. he amount of subsidy earned per student for a lecture occupying: one hour per week during the whole session would be 7s per annum, and so on in proportion for one occupying a greater number of hours. No claim can bo made for students who arc working for a degree, and for the majority of students in some classes no claim can be made. 111 others, claim could be made for a certain number of students, the proportion varying from year to year. The estimated amount of subsidy which might De received was £40 to £80 per annum. Attention might be drawn to the fact that notice of work proposed to be done m classes must be forwarded to the Minister before work is begun, and must be approved by him. Instruction must be approved by the. Minister and the classes be subject to visitation, inspection and examination by an inspector. Some doubt existed as to the possible bearing of section 5 of the Act in accordance with which recognition may be refused to classes when other classes providing similar instruction exist within a distance of five miles. The Chairman said that lie would direct tho attention of the Technical School Association to the provisions ot the Act with regard to college classes. _ Piano: Dr. Thomas wrote requesting that a piano bo supplied for the practical demonstration of music lectures. Granted. Resignation: Tho Rev. W. J. Williams notified that as he was about to leave the colony for a period, he wished to resign ms seat on the Council. The Chairman expressed his regret at the loss of Mr. Williams, and said he would forward the resignation to the Government for acceptance. Tiupiri Reserve: The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking the Council to pass a resolution authorising tho Board to d<>al with the land comprised in run 5 of the Taupiri endowment. Agreed to. Next Meeting: It was resolved to hold the next meeting of the Council on the 19th prOX. „-,- Accounts: Accounts amounting to ±.jo.i 18s lOd were passed for payment.
