Kirk, Isaacs, Browne. • The Chairman in welcoming the members, said it was with feelings they could oil understand, that he suggested, on behalf of .the i: Minister,*:.they should adjourn for -at. least one day, after arranging a few matters of routine. They were all acquainted with the fact that elementary education in Great Britain and Ireland, dated from the : accession of her late Majesty. The suggestion to adjourn was adopted. The hours of meeting were fixed at half-past nine a.m. to one p.m., and half-past two to half-past five p.m. daily. . After discussion it was resolved, by 15 to 14, not to admit the press to the conference, thus following the precedent established at the conference of 1894. The resolutions passed each day will f be communicated to the press. | : Mr. T. R. Fleming was appointed were- I tary to the conference, and Mr. F. D. Thomson, Education Department, assistant secretary and shorthand writer. I A number of committees were set up.
