VOLUNTEERING NEWS.
INSPECTION OF No. 1 BATTALION. The monthly Government inspection of the eight companies comprising the No. ] Battalion Auckland Infantry took place at the Drill Hall last evening, the officer commanding, Lieutenant-Colonel White, in the ab senco of the district commander, Colona Banks, 4 acting as inspecting officer. Th« companies en parade were: The Victoria Rifles, College Rifles, Nos. 1, 2, and i Native Rifles, Auckland Rifles, Nowtou Rifles, and No. 2 Victoria Rifles, and though the muster was a creditable one on the whole, some of the corps were not as well represented as might have been the case. The men bore a soldierly appearance, and were steady on parade. After the inspection Lieutenant-Colonel Whit© presented the district champion belt (Dr. J. Logan Campbell's) to Colour-Sergeant Atkinson, of the Auckland Rifles, who won the trophy at the recent annual shooting competition, open to all volunteers of the Auckland Garrison. In handing over the belt lieutenant-Colonel White said it afforded him much pleasure to know that it was going to the coloursergeant, as he was one of the battalion recruits, and had won the coveted trophy by strict attention to shooting and assiduous praotioe, thus getting a splendid example to his fellow recruits of the Auckland district. The result went to show that the belt was within the reach of the young shots if they only persovored in shooting practice. Th« battalion was then formed up in order en route, and, headed by the drum and fife band (under Bandmaster Dormer), marched to the Metropolitan Ground, at the rear at Government House, where a profitable course of battalion drill was indulged in.
