WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN correspondent. ' Wellington, Monday. RAILWAYS. , In consequence of the greatly increased traffic on the Hurunui-Bluff line the workshops at. Invorcargill will have to be enlarged. The site of the present workshops is too small. Negotiations are proceeding to purchase a- larger piece of land for the purpose of erecting the new shops thereon. The additional plant that will be necessary has been ordered from England. MINISTERIAL. The Hon. J. G. Ward (Minister for Railways) is inspecting the Otago Central. He will return to Wellington on Sunday. Next week, in company with the general manager of railways, he will go to Auckland to inspect the progress of the Main Trunk line and the other railways further north. The Premier and Mrs. Seddon have gone to Milford Sound. The Minister for Lands has abandoned his intention of being present at the Dunedin Agricultural Show. He goes to Nelson to-morrow. The Minister for Mines will go North in a few days. He is to visit the Waihi district, in respect to mining claims. THE COAL MINES COMMISSION. This Commission will meet in Wellington early next week. It will sit in various parts of the Auckland coal mining districts before going to the South Island. GRADING OATS. The Imperial authorities have requested the colonial Department of Agriculture to grade 5500 tons of New Zealand oats, ordered for shipment to Africa. PROMOTION. Mr. Arthur Hume, a son of the Inspector of Prisons, has accepted a position as engineer to one of the large mining companies in South Africa, at a salary of £400 a year.
