The shorthorn bulls which Mr. Gilruth is to purchase in England will be kept at the centres of the dairying industry (at the State farms where practicable), and placed with a limited number of cows, which are to be carefully selected after examination as to fitness for breeding purposes. The stallions will be kept on the State farms, and their services regulated by a similar restriction. Reports received 'by the Labour Department from its various agencies indicate that there have been very few applications for employment during the past month, and that all who desire work can easily obtain it. Messrs. E. C. Robinson, W. 0. Beere, and J. V. Haskell have been granted certificates of competency as duly authorised surveyors. Two 61b Nordenfeldt guns, lately used by the " D " Battery Artillery, were shipped tonight for Christchurch by the Tarawera. They will be handed over to the " E " Battery. The city engineer has been instructed to make inquiries as to the practicability of providing new water-carts which will have sufficient spread of water to sprinkle the whole width of the street at one process. The Minister for Defence has approved of the formation of a submarine mining corps for Wellington. The Government has placed locally an order for 500 hats for the volunteers. It is stated that the hats produced here are equal to the imported article, and are less costly. If the order is satisfactorily fulfilled it is intended to obtain the whole of the supplies required by tender. DcNEDiN, Thursday. Mr. Wm. Wyinks, of the Lands Department, at Dunedin, has been appointed District Land Registrar, at Invercargill, vice Mr. Morgan, deceased. Reefton. Thursday. A fire last night did a good deal of damage to the back part of premises occupied by Sutherland, hairdresser; James, bootmaker; and the City Hotel. Sutherland's stock and the hotel furniture were also damaged by water. Timaru", Thursday. The Timaru Presbyterian congregation unanimously carried a resolution in favour of individual cups for the communion service. The minister, the Rev. W. Gillies, put his foot down on a suggestion to introduce voluntaries and anthem singing by the choir.
Ohiustchuech, Thursday. Replying to telegrams from local members and others, the Minister for Justice says he does not think anything has been disclosed to warrant interference with the carrying out of the sentence of 14 days' imprisonment imposed on Mrs. Long for cruelty to her stepchildren.
