Bewick,' Moreing, and Co. furnish the following report upon the operations in the Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company's mine, at Karangahake, for the past four weeks : —The stoping of the ore body northwards between No. 3 and No. 2 levels has been completed in the Talisman section. The work of stoping is being continued south at No. 3 level, Bonanza section. The reef is 2ftin v width, and the ore won has proved payable. V ; The stopes on the south shoot of ore in the same section, at No. 4 level, have been carried up to the floor of the No. 3 level. The reef, which is 3ft in width, is yielding payable ore, all of which has been forwarded to the mill for treatment. The crosscut for the Dubbo reef is now in a total, distance of 320 ft through a good class of country rock, which is easily worked. At No. 5 level the stopes have been carried along a total distance of 300 ft. The reef has varied in width from 2ft 6in to Bft. The ore won, though not of a high grade, has proved payable, and is comparatively easily won. The prospecting crosscut put in west of the south drive was carried along 66ft, but no reef being met with as yet, driving in that direction has been temporarily discontinued. Driving south on the course of the reef has been continued at No. .6 level, the total distance driven being 206 ft. The reef, which had become somewhat pinched for a few feet, has opened out again, and a better class of country has been met with. The reef is 3ft in width, and well defined. Judging from the strong flow of water coming through the face the reef may be expected to widen shortly. The stopes at No. 7 level, Talisman section, have been further developed. The reef is a fine strong body of ore, from 3ft to Bft in width, from which a large tonnage has been sent to the battery. The crosscut in this level has been extended a total distance of 161 ft, and we hope to intersect the reef in the Bonanza section after about 40ft of further crosscutting. The total distance driven in the crosscut for No. 8 level, Talisman section, is 200 ft. The rock, which has been rather hard for some time, has improved, so the contractors may now be expected to make better headway. The excavation of the site for the necessary new hopper is nearly completed. The drive going north on the Dubbo reef, at No. 1 level, has been extended 65ft, making the total distance driven along the line or reef 272 ft. The reef, which has been rather broken and disturbed, may be expected to improve as the drive is extended northwards, as it will penetrate deeper country. At No. 2 level the drive has been, extended 68ft northwards along the western wall of the reef, making the total distance driven from the point of intersection by the Royal Mail crosscut 411 ft. The drive has been carried along the wall of the reef the whole distance, the quartz being left intact. Men are now employed cutting through the reef at intervals to ascertain its width and value. A rise has been commenced on the reef near the south side of the crosscut. Preparation's are now being made to resume driving on the reef intersected by the crosscut at No. 3 level in the Talisman Extended section. A ventilating fan and air-pipes are being placed in position, and driving on the reef will lie commenced next week. The crosscut for No. 4 level has been advanced 29ft, making the total distance driven 817 ft. A hard bar of country rock was met with early in the month, and has hindered the contractors from making good headway. Judging from the strong flow of water met with to-day-a change for the better may be expected very shortly. The drive going north on the Crown Extended reef formation has been advanced 10ft, making the total distance driven north of the crosscut 160 ft. At this point a strong flow of water was met with. Operations have been temporarily suspended, but may be resumed at an early date. All the ground and aerial tramways are in first-class working order. During the month of October the battery worked 26 days 5 hours 55 minutes, and crushed 569 tons of ore. The Krupp ball mill worked 26 days 18 hours 20 minutes, and crushed 331 tons of ore. The clean-up for October resulted in a recovery of 24160z 18dwt of bullion, the value of which is estimated at £2179 12s 4d. From the date of the commencement of the excavation of the new battery site, heavy rains have fallen almost continuously, greatly interfering with constructional works. A portion of the high retaining wall in front of the concentrator terrace was carried away during a severe storm, and this caused a collapse of a portion of the framework of the vat shed in course of erection. The damage done to the shed has already been repaired at very trivial cost, and as good progress is being made with constructional works generally as can be expected in the present unfavourable and unseasonable weather. It has been decided not to close down the dry crushing plant at the end of the present month as originally intended, as the running of that plant until February will not materially interfere with the erection of the wet crushing mill. BROKEN HILL G.M. CO. The drive in the Broken, Hill Gold Mining Company's mine, at Waiomo, has only been advanced 30ft during the past week owing to a run of earth, and the quantity of timber required to secure same, but the manager is of opinion that he will be able to make more rapid progress now, as the sheddings from the sides are apparently smaller. F. M. Brown v. C. McLean, forfeiture of river claim, at Karangahake. The application was objected to by W. Tregoweth and H. Gordon, on the ground that they both held interests in the claim. It appeared that though the claim was taken out by C. McLean, who had left the country, and could not be found, the two objectors held certain interests in the claim, even

though their names did not appear on the register. The Warden, in giving judgment, pointed out that, though he did not wish to make the wo objectors- suffer by forfeiting their interests, he would be quite justified in doing so, especially as both were old miners, and should by this time know enough as to the proper course that should be adopted for protection. He really could not see why he (the Warden)" should be called upon to protect persons who were not men enough to have their names placed on the register as being part owners, or real owners, of a claim. He hoped the day was not far distant when any person having an interest in a claim would have his name appearing on the register, so that all could see to what extent his interest amounted. Under the present circumstances he thought he would let the two objectors retain their interest, and forfeit the remainder of the claim. Eventually an amicable settlement was arrived at, whereby forfeiture was decreed of the whole area, on the understanding that the complainant should give to Herbert Gordon a 15-16 th share, and to Wm. Tregoweth l-16th of the whole, in the event of his taking up the area as a claim within the period allowed. Receiver of Gold Revenue v. J. McLennan, claim £7 10s rent, and also the forfeiture of an occupation license, No. 136. Forfeiture was decreed, and judgment given for the amount claimed, with costs lis.

RESIDENCE SITES. STATEMENT BY THE WARDEN. [by TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Thursday. In the course of the proceedings at the Warden's Court this morning, Mr. Warden Bush drew the attention of all interested to section 121, subsection 2, of the Mining Act, 1898, which provided that, excepting with the consent of the Warden, no person can hold more than one residence site at one time, and he also said that he would probably refuse to allow the registration of a transfer of a residence site to a person who already held one. It was pointed out by Mr. Kenrick that as transfers under such circumstances had commonly been made out up to the present, he thought notice of the Warden's intention should be given to the public, and thus avoid any trouble or complications. The Warden held, however, that it was not his duty to make public comments and explanations on every or any clause- of the Act until it was tendered necessary by reason of the matter coming before him for adjudication.
