BANKRUPTCY.
MEETING OF OREDIIORg. 'A meeting ot creditors in tbo estate jf William Fred. Hammond, bankrupt, was held in the office of the official assignee yesterday. There were present: Messr.. P. Virtue (Northern Roller Milling Company, and holding proxies for several othei creditors), J. M. Mennio (Mennie and Dey), and J. D. Roberta Mr. Virtue was in the chair.- The bankrupt and hi? solicitor (Mr. Newton) were present, and in the course ot his examination the former stated that he had been in business a. a bakei in Hamilton since June, 1893. He had then no capital, but was free of debt, excepting about £5. He did fairly well at first, but suffered loss through his oven falling in twice, and through malicious interference with his water supply. In June last his health tailed, and he sold out his business tor £50. Of this £7 was still due to his estate. The £43 he received he divided amongst his principal creditors. He had only had casual employment since selling out. He owed £180 17? lid to 23 unsecured creditors, and his only assets were book debts (estimated to produce £26 ss), and furniture (estimated to realise £18). During a further examination by Mr. Virtue debtor stated that he had given one creditor £15 out of the £43 he received for his business. On the motion of Mi. MenDie, it was resolved, " That, inasmuch as there appears to have been payments made, which seem to this meeting to have been of a preferential character, the official assignee be requested to have the account, in W. F. Hammond's estato thoroughly investigated, with a view to recovering any moneys which may have been improperly paid away."
