POLICE COURT NEWS. Mb. T. Hutchison. S.M., presided at the Police Court yesterday morning. Drunkenness: A first offender was fined 53, to be deducted from his bail. James Ferguson was fined 10s, and Frederick Smith was fined 10s, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment. Robert MoMinn was fined ss, or in default 24 hour*' imprisonment. Alleged Assault at Epsom : George Murphy was charged that on November 18, at Epsom, ho did assault Annie Carr, and further, that he did assault Richard Carr; and George Evans was charged with assaulting Edward Cluetfc, also at jtpsoni. On the application of Mr. J. R. Reed, who appeared fqr the accused, tho hearing was adjourned until Saturday. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £25 each to the accused Murphy, and in one surety of £25 to Evans. ' Watch-stealing: A young Maori was charged with stealing a watch, valued at £6 13s, the property of John Watson. Mi. J. R. Reed, who appeared on behalf of tho accused, stated that as he could not substantiate a statement mado by Puhipi at the hearing of the trial last woek, to the effect that ho was not in town at tho time of the occurrence, accused would now plead guilty. At- he hat* been previously convicted, His Worship imposed a senienoo of four months' imprisonment with hard labour. Threatening Behaviour For threatening behaviour in Queen-street, whereby a breach of the pcaco was occasioned, Henry Joseph McKeown was fined 10s, and costs. Remanded: John James Dover was, on the application of ChiefDotectivo Grace, remanded for a week on a charge of having, in May last, broken and entered the shop of Cias. K. Lovatt, and stolen £1 worth of tools. Obtaining Money Under False Pretences: Joseph Westmoreland was charged that, being a rogue and vagabond, he attempted to obtain money from one F. G. Clayton by moans of a false representation. "Accused was also charged with attempting to obtain money from ono J. H. Harrison by 811111,0.1 means. Prisoner pleaded guilty, but asked for probation. Sub Inspector Wilson stated accused had collected a largo sum of money for an alleged bonovolent purpose of assisting a Mrs. Blackburn, whom it was discovered did not oxist. He handed in a list of the sums collected to show that many well-known gentlemen had been defrauded. His Worship remanded the accused until Friday, so that the report of tho probation officer might be obtained. Alleged Forgery: William Hughes, an elderly man, was charged that in or about April last, he did forgo tho name of O. Nieholls to an order for calendars, by which Percy Spencer acted as if the same was genuine. Mr. Battley. who appeared for the prosecutor, Percy Spencer, applied for a remand until this morning. The request was granted. Bylaw Cases: For driving without lights after dark in Victoria Croscent, James Beaver was fined 5s and costs, 7s. Henry Surman, for riding his bicycle on the footpath in Remuera, was fined 40s and costs, 12s, while for a similar offence Charles Court was fined 10s and costs, 12s. Assault on the Wharf: William Windsor was charged, on the information of John Francis Keenan, with having assaulted the complainant on the wharf on Saturday evening, 3rd inst. Mr. Theo. Cooper appeared for the complainant, and Mi. W. L. Fitzherbert to, the defendant. Aftci evidence had heen given at considerable length for both parties, His Worship convicted the defendant and fined him £2. with costs £2 lis, in default to suffer two weeks' imprisonment with hard labour. A plea for time to pay the money was refused. A counter charge by Windsor against Keenan was dismissed. KAWAKAWA S.M. COURT. . At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, Kawakawa, on Wednesday. November 14, before Mr. E. C. Blomfield. S.M., tiie following OfisAs were heard and dealt with George Williams v. J. Mackev. claim £5 4s 6d, for wages due. Mr. V, H. Peed appeared for the plaintiff, and applied for an amendment of the summons which had been issued against Mackoy only, as he had since learned that Mr. John Russell was a partner in the firm. Tho case was consequently adjourned for service upon the latter. William Christy v. Henry Lane, claim £19 15s sd, being balance pn account of £219 15s sd, for timber delivered to defendant at Opun. Mr. Reed appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. Proudfoot for defendant. Judgment was (riven for defendant, with costs £1 lis. Tepara Paora v. Hemi Reita: Accused was charged with assaulting tho informant by striking her about tho body and turning her out of the house on October 10. Accused pleaded nc< guilty. Mr. Reed appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Proudfoot for the accused. Tepara Paora having given evidence, and a number of witnesses being examined, accused was sentenced to two months' hard labour in Auckland Gaol, and to pay ?.osts of the case, £6 14s [Own Correspondent.].
