RECENT NATIVE LEGISLA TION

[BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Taubanga, Wednesday Yesterday morning a distinguished Maori guest arrived here, namely, Mr. Taingakawa, premier in Mahuta's parliament. He was met at Hairini by a number of Tauranga chiefs, and escorted into town, he and his private secretary being entertained at dinner by the local natives. A meeting was held to-day to discuss matters connected with the Bill passed through the House last session. From here Mr. Taingakawa proceeds to Te Puke, where he will also hold discussions on the new legislation. The Hon. J. Carroll has declined an invitation to be present at the approaching meeting of the Waikato and Ngatimaniapoto tribes, for the purpose of discussing the question of appointing one Council under the Native Lands Administration Bill, on the ground that the discussion is purely local.
