SALMON FOR NEW ZEALAND
[BV TELEGRAPH.—PRESB ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The Government have decided to construct a salmon rearing station on the Hftkateramea stream, North Otago, where an area of 20 acres has been acquired on Robert Campbell and Co.'s Station Peak property, and also a temporary station on Lake Ohau. Mr. Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, goes South to-night to superintend the work. The Agent-General will send out regular supplies of ova, which will be hatched out at the station, and the fish kept until three years old before the liberation. The first consign-' ment of 800,000 is expected from America shortly, being the gift of the United States Pish Commissioner and the Canadian Government. 'Mr. Ayson is confident of the success of the scheme, inasmuch as the fish will be big enough to fend for themselves when liberated, and as they will be full of spawn and will deposit eggs before going to sea they may be expected to return to their original habitat.
