SMUGGLING PROSECUTIONS.
TWO ITALIANS FINED. At the Auckland Police Court yesterday, before Mr. H. W. Brabant, S.M., three Italians, named Do Campo Salvador* Dori Jos phe, and Paul Segantine, were charged, at the instance of the Collector of Customs, with 'having in their possession dutiable goods upon which duty had not been paid. Against Salvadorc there were two informations, the first of having in his possession six gallons of gin, value £3 ss, and the second of having seven bottles of gin, value £1 Is; Josephe was charged with having U bottles of gin, valued at £2 4s. The Crown Prosecutor (the Hon. J. A. 'Pole), who appeared on behalf of Mr. Rose, Collector of Customs, said that the charge against Segantine, who was joined with Salvadoro in one of the charges, would not be proceeded with, but lie would proceed against tlio other, accused to. recover tlio triple value of the goods. Mr. Cotter, who appeared on their behalf, entered a plea of guilty, end His Worship ordered Salvadorc to pay £13 8s and costs, £2 lis ; and Josephe to pay £5 12s and cosh, £1 3s, three times the value of the goods if each case.
