DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
ESTIMATED LOSSES £5000. [by telecraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] Hawera, Friday. J he township of Manaia was the scene of a disastrous fire to-day. Very few particulars are to hand at present, but it is stated that the fire started in the Bank of New Zealand, and. getting a strong hold, swept away a number of business premises before it could be checked.
Among the buildings destroyed, in addition to the bank, were the shops of Mr. White, cabinet-maker ; Mr. Hall, draper ; Stevenson. Baker and Hird, drapers ; Nolan, Tnnks. and Co., land agents, and the Manaia Hotel.
The outbreak is believed to have been caused bv a defective chimney.
As far as can be found out the insurances are :— George White, nil ; Hall and Co., amount unknown, in New Zealand Company ; Stevenson, amount unknown, in Northern ; Egmont Drapery Company, £400 in •uagdeburg Company ; Mrs. Tait (hotel), £000 on furniture in Royal ; C. N. Raine (bank agent). £200 on furniture, New Zealand Company : M. Franklin (owner of ...annia Hotel and buildings occupied bv the Drapery C'ompanv, Stevenson, and Nolan), i/ioOO in toe New Zealand Company ; Daw's Buile'in'js, occupied bv Hall and Co. and George White, are insured, but the office and amount are unknown.
The estimated losses are £5000.
