AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS CHRISTMAS NUMBER.

ANNUAL PRIZE COMPETITION.

DEEDS OP HEROISM IN NEW ZEALAND.

Tire prize competition in the Auckland Weekly News Christmas Number this year will be devoted -to a record of deeds of heroism performed in New Zealand.

This colony, like most new countries, is rich in stories of personal courage, of personal endurance, of many striking heroic deeds which have not yet found their way into print, but which deserve to be told and given a place in our colonial history. The proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News hope to promote that object by offering prizes for the three best accounts of heroic deeds to be published in the Christmas Number of tin News.

Heroism is not confined to the battlefield. It is to be found in all stages of life and among all conditions of people. Every city, every town and hamlet, every class lias its heroes and heroines whose deeds are tinchronicled, but which, nevertheless, are deeds of true heroism.

Heroism is too often associated with the dramatic and sensational, but there is also the heroism of patient suffering, of unobtrusive self-sacrifice, the heroism of gentleness, of forgiveness, of love. Wo are not all born to carry despatches through tho enemy's lines at imminent peril of our lives, to lead a forlorn hope, to rescue from drowning or fire, or to face the deadly chokedamp in the mine in the noble task of saving life. The great heroes are few, but the small heroes are many.

What is wanted in the prize competition are short and pithy accounts of acts of heroism, great or small, that have been performed in New Zealand, whether in war or peace, and whether in the workshop or tho home, the bush or the town.

These accounts should not exceed 1200 words, and should be addressed to the Com' petition Editor, Auckland Weekly. News. They must reach him not later than July 10. They must be written on one side of the paper only, and where a nom de plume is adopted the writer's real name and address should be enclosed in a separate envelope. First Prize £5 5s Second Prize £3 3s Third Prize £2 2s
