THE BRIDGE AT CAMBRIDGE.

At tho meeting of tho Waipa County Council at Ohaupo on Tuesday last, Mr. W. H. Mandono reported as follows re the proposed new bridge to cross the Waikato at Cambridge: —

" In accordance with a previous resolution of the Council, a conference of the chairmen of local bodies interested in the bridge was held at Hamilton, the following conclusions being arrived at: —That as far as the new bridge was concerned, the meoting was premature, as there did not appear to be any definite information to place before the meeting. Moreover, the Government grant, the expenditure of which was the subject to bo discussed, was for a special purpose, viz., repairs to tho old . bridge. With regard to this, the opinion was expressed that tho Waipa County had tho matter in its own hands, and had full power to proceed; also, that the other bodies represented at the meeting had full power to leave the matter to Waipa's discretion. Further, the opinion was expressed that in any case a long timo must elapse before a- new bridge could bo erected, and that it would bo a mistake to allow the present structure to remain in an unsafe condition meanwhile."

The Chairman (Mr. J. Fisher? proposed, " That the supervisor of works bo empowered to arrange with an engineer to draw up plans and specifications for the expenditure of tho Government grant, not to exceed £400." Mr, Stool seconded. He said ho entirely agreod with the opinion expressed at the conference that the Council was responsible only for the old bridgo, and not for a now one. In connection with the foregoing, tho following letter from the Surveyor-General was read:—"l have to acknowledge receipt cf Mr. Bowdon's letter of the 19th tilt., and in reply thereto havo to say that Mr. Burd has been instructed to make a survey of both the new site and the site of the present bridge. It is suggested, however, that yon should employ your own engineer to prepare plans, etc., for the repairs. Tho Government will contribute it 3 quota." Members spoko in praiseworthy terms of tho act-on of the Government.
