RE OVERWORKED CLERKS.
TO TIIE EDITOR.
Sir,-—On April 20 last I wrote you in connection with the above, and I have read with interest the letters which have since appeared in your columns on this subject. The reason I again encroach upon your valuable space is to point, out that on page 298 of the Official Year Book, dated September, 1898, there is a clause under the beading of Shops and Shop Assistants Act, -which reads as follows: " The Act also enumerates the working hours, holidays, etc., of clerks employed in banks, mercantile offices, etc." Now, if tho Act really docs apply to dorks, why is it not enforced? If it does not do bo, who is responsible for so gross a mis-statement? I should esteem it a favour if you could throw any light upon 'his matter, for as you are aware, the Official Year Book in question was prepared under instruo tions from the Premier by the 'Registrar-Gene-ral.—l am, etc., Giurno. Auckland, May 7, 1900.
