THAMES DRAINAGE BOARD. A meeting of the Thames Drainage Board was held in the office- of Mr. D. G. MacDonnell yesterday. In the absence of Mr. H. A. Gordon, Mr. G. S. Kissling presided. There were also present: Messrs. S. Heskcth. J. Park, T. A. Dnnlop, M. A. Clark, and J. R. Gray. The Chairman said he was sorry that it once more devolved upon him to report the death of a member of the Board. That was the eighth time this unwelcome duty had fallen upon him. There seemed to be a fatality attending members of the Thames Drainage Boards. He thought they should just attend to pressing business, and then adjourn, as a token of respect to the memory of the late Mr. J. Friar Clarke. This course was agreed to. The Chairman then moved, " That this. Board place on record their deep regret at the loss of the services of the late Mr. J. Friar Clarke, and their appreciation of his valuable services, and that the secretary convey the Board's deepest sympathy to deceased's family in their sad affliction." 'The motion was carried unanimously. Accounts totalling £192 5s 3d were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. H. A. Gordon. The report of the manager of works was read, and stated that everything in connection with the pumping plant had been working well and smoothly during the past month, and that the total working expenses for the month had been £181 lis 6d. The consumption of coal had ken 156 tons for the month. The report was received. The secretary reported that the balance of assets over liabilities was £1277 18s sd. The meeting then adjourned until June 13.

MONOWAI 6.M. CO.

The Monowai Gold Mining Company's battery, at Waiomo, commenced crushing operations on Monday last. The new machinery is running well Operations in the mine are in full progress, and sufficient quartz is available to keep the battery going. SOUTHERN MINING. GLENROCK CONSOLIDATED (LIMITED). Tho Glcnrock Consolidated Company (Limited), of Macetown, Otago, cleaned up for the month of April, and, from 150 tons crushed, obtained 103oz lldwt 15gr gold. During the month 16 tons of concentrates were treated for a yield of 131oz lldwt llgr smelted gold. This return has enabled the company to more than pay expenses, leaving a balance for remittance to London. The country in the incline face is still hard, and the progress slow, and the reef here has not yet been found. The reef in the stopes varies very much in size, from Ift to 3ft in width, and is of payable quality. The prospects of the mine at present are encouraging. WOODSTOCK G.M. CO.

AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE ORE VALUES. [FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Wednesday. The operations at the Woodstock Gold Mining Company's property, at Karangahake, have caused some disappointment, inasmuch as it never assumed for any length of time that place among the bullion-pro-ducers of Ohinemuri that was anticipated. All kinds of changes were made in the method of treatment, the ore being of such a refractory nature that it seemed difficult to really strike the proper process. Another reason given for the non-success of the property was the limitation in the quantity of pay ore opened up. These difficulties, however, are now said to be in the stage of removal, and it is hoped that ero long the anticipations held as to the bullion-produc-ing capabilities of the Woodstock mine will bo fully realised. In the first place, Mr. Rich has the highest opinion of the efficacy of the concentration-amalgamation process, and the ultimate cvaniding of the residue; and the plant has been thoroughly fitted up for tho treatment of ore under that regime. Of course a good plant, without good ore, is really not worth much to the shareholders, and before the suspension of 'crashing operations, only low grade ore was treated. Lately, however, greater activity has been manifested in development work, and Mr. Rich now informs me that he has encountered a couple of good runs of pay ore. The first 'was at No. 4 level, where the Maria lode is being operated upon, on the southern side of the river. When first commencing work, the lode was composed of stringers, but gradually the formation opened out, until now it is a fine body of stone, measuring the full width of the drive. Not only has the reef shown an increase in size, but a marked improvement lias token place in tho quality of the stone being grassed, and the manager anticipates developing a run of good oro here. The crosscut, run out from No. 4 level to intersect Shepherd's lode has also been successful in its object, and the ore body is about 3ft wide. The reef is now being followed on its northern trend, with the object of getting underneath the old workings. The No. 5 level is the other point where a payable chute of oro has been encountered, the lode in this working being fully 6ft wide. With regard to other workings, a connection Ins been effected between the Nos, 1 and 3 levels on the Ivanhoo section of the property, the distance intervening being about 170 ft, the major portion of which, Mr. Rich informs me, is ore of a remunerative grade. This should be very gratifying news to shareholders, showing, as it does, that the development works in hand are opening up somo good blocks of ground. The battery, as already indicated, has been thoroughly renovated, but I understand that beforo crushing is commenced, the large mains are to bo extended so as to connect with tho new dam which has recently been constructed across the Ohineuiuri River. The rumour that was current yesterday to the effect that the company's dam had been carried away during the recent gales, proves, I am glad to say, to be incorrect.

EIKUTAIA GOLD SYNDICATE. Paeiioa, Wednesday. Development work on the Hikutoia Gold Syndicate's property at Marototo is confined to the Pay Rock section. Tho drive, which was commenced from the No. 4 winze, 70ft level, has been carried along a distance of about 30ft, where a crosscut was put through tho reef, and revealed a nice lode, 6ft in thickness, carrying fair values. The drive north has now been suspended, and the lode is being prospected in a southerly direction.
