GUM INDUSTRY ACT.

Dargaville, Wednesday. Tub first case under the Gum Industry Act was heard at the Dargaville Court to-day, an Austrian being charged with digging gum without a license. Mr. McLeod prosecuted for the County Council. Defendant, who was sometimes known as Gagevich, sold his gum under the name of Matich, and refusing to give any name to the ranker was arrested. In Court he gave the name Botica. Defendant had refused to pay 20s license, and was prosecuted in accordance with the county solicitor's opinion that aliens must pay 20s. Defendant was convicted, the fine, including costs, amounting to £2 lis 6d. Defendant was digging on private lands owned by storekeepers, FIRE IN WELLINGTON. —-*» [nt TELEGRAPH— association.] Wellington, Wednesday. A fire in Cuba-street early this morning destroyed a fruit shop occupied by an Italian named Antonio. A confectioner's shop, the property of the late R. Darrochvitch, and Allen's drapery store, one one side, and the shops of Collman, jeweller, on the other, had narrow escapes.
