PROPOSED PUBLIC HALL FOR DEVONPORT
At the Devonport Borough Council last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. C. Macky) gave notice of motion "re the best scheme for the erection of a Town Hall." The Mayor said the time was not far distant for the erection of a building suitable for a town hall'. •' He was certain such a building would be highly appreciated for the purpose of socials and entertainments. He brought the matter under the notice of the Council to see if the Finance and Legal Committee could not co into the question of finance. He suggested that the building be. combined as a postal and telegraph office and hall, and that the Government be invited to become tenants. He submitted plans of a suitable building by Messrs. Alf.' Bartley and G. A. Pearce. The plans showed buildings estimated to hold about 1000 persons. Mr. O. Mays said public subscriptions might be invited for the purpose. He understood that certain people were willing to contribute. Mr. M. Niccol raised some objection to the site of the present offices being used. The Mayor moved, "That the matter be referred to the Finance and Legal Committee," which was seconded by Mr. Mays and carried.
