The A.R.C. handicappor, Mr. J. 0. Evett, who returned from Wanganui on Saturday last, will to-day declare the weights for the following events to be ran at tho A.R.O. Spring Meeting: — President's Handicap, Shorts Handicap, Hunt Club Cup (handicap steoplechasc), Pony Handicap, Flying Handicap, Hunt Club Handicap Hurdles, Fanners' Handicap Steeplechase. A further addition to [the collection cf Australian-bred mares purchased' in New South Wales by Mr. J. B. Williamson, on behalf of Mr. Leonard Marshall, was brought down to Auckland by the s.s. Talune in ilie shape of Matakanui, a daughter of Churchill and Ruby H. A racing pony, Minerva, which was brought to Auckland by the s.s. Talune under lease to the Ellerslie trainer, M. McAuliffe, received severe injuries while being landed from the steamer yesterday morning. While in the horse-box the pony became very excited, and, playing up, she broke the securing ropes, and getting her hind legs over the door, she got hung up. Oil getting her limbs released, Minerva dashed out of the box, and slipping on the deck received further injuries. The pony was badly cut about the legs, but the effects may not prove so serious as appear. VICTORIAN RACING NOTES, By Telegraph.— Association— Melbourne, October 23. Cocos displayed excellent form in the Oaulfield Cup, and he promises to be very dangerous in the Melbourne Cup. Gauleon also has a good chance. Scorn did not please, and lias receded to 100 to 3 for the Cup, Dewey is nominal favourite for the V.R.O. Derby and Melbourne Cup at 3 to 1 and 10 to 1 respectively. Lancaster's performance in tho Maiden Plate on Saturday was not up to Derby form. . . . , i • . • Cranborry's preparation is giving his trainer some anxiety. Cocos is a firm favourite fo; the Melbourne Cup at 10 to 1. Had Bardon ridden him more resolutely in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, lie might have been placed. Cremona has been backed for the Cup to win £5000 at 100 to 3, closing a point shorter. Clarion was backed to win £3000 at 100 to 3. Scratchings: For Melbourne Cup—Relic, Stan dish, Nitre, Grizzle; and Promontory for all engagements.
