THE ELECTORAL ROLLS.
' The contractor for the printing of the principal roll 'for the Eden electorate lodged all the new rolls with the registrar yesterday afternoon. The total number of electors for the chief roll for the December elections in 1896 was 3928, whilst the number on the present roll has reached 4755, showing an increase of 827. It is believed the supplementary roll will exhibit a proportionate augmentation. The office staff are now engaged classifying and arranging all applications for the second rolls for Eden, Parnell, Manukau, and City of 'Auckland. It appears imperative that all the organisations and others should forthwith lodge all new claims with the proper officer, so that, if necessary, inquiries may be made where the circumstances warrant. The City of Auckland supplementary roll is likely to contain between 6000 and 7000 names.
In order to convenience officers and men engaged in the coastal trade, Mr. King has specially instructed one of his reliable assistants to go to the vessels and steamers and obtain all details from the commanders, and see that all officers and seamen are properly placed on the registers, and seamen's rights authorised, so that all seamen who are unavoidably absent on the general election day, may be able to apply to the nearest Customs officer or postmaster, produce their passports, obtain their ballot-papers, and register their privileges for the different electorates, in order that the papers may go forward to the several returning officers.
