SAILS ON COASTAL STEAMERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— yiiu not think our coastal steamers should havo to carry sails in caso of accidents, or damage to machinery, or broken shafts. Suppose in a gale blowing.in shore, something happened to the machinery, and that there were no sails to keep the steamer off the rocks, she would be on the shore in a very short time. Prevention is better than cure. I will give only two instances, which havo occurred within tho last two weeks. I quoto the telegrams from the Herald:—"Melbourne, September 24.— steamer Claucus 111 a gale, the propellor broken, had a narrow escape from being wrecked. A steamer went to her assistance, and towed her into port." " Noumea, September 25.—Tho steamer Tanais, bound from ojdney to this port, lias been towed in. olio broke her shaft 200 miles from port." :\ow how many broken shafts have wo had lately, and steamers drifting about, but they nearly all had plenty of sea-room: what about our coastal steamers, travelling close in stioie. It 18 time some alteration was made.— am, etc., Traveller.
