A LOCAL NUISANCE.
TO the EDITOR. Sir,—Will you allow me a small portion <.f your valuable space to draw attention to a Seat evil existing in and around the Surrey ills district, I refer to the number of horses, cattle, and goats (principally the latter), which are allowed to roam at will, breaking into people's gardens, eating and destroying everything that conies in their way. It seems to be nobody's business to interfere to protect the residents of the Hills against this nuisance. I have known the Council to fine a man for bringing his horse and cart upon the footpath when the road has been quite impassable; at the same time I liavo seen goats tied at the edge of the footpath on one side of the road with a rope reaching across to the other side. If a horse or buggy had happened to come along at the time, in all probability a serious accident would have been the result, and yet there has been'llo Government official who has deemed it his duty to interfere. In fact, the goat-owners of Surrey Hills could not
enjoy greater liberty to endanger tho lives and property of tho residents if no such body as the Grey Lynn Borough Council existed. I think it ie time these things were seen to, and tho property of the residents as wall as the safety and comfort of pedestrians wero protected.— am, etc., A Resident.
