CHARGES OF SLYGROG SELLING.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Te Awamutu, Friday. A LARGE number of sly grog-selling oases were disposed of on Wednesday by Captain Jackson, S.M. Twonty-eight were set down for hearing, all against people living in tho King Country. The cases are the outcome of a raid recently made by Constables Stanyer, Carroll, McConachie, Hyde, and McPhee, when liquor to about tho value of £30 was seized. Inspector Cullen conducted tho prosecution, and Mr, A. Swarbriok, qf Hamilton, appeared for all tho defendants. One defendant named Ormsby had to answer seven informations. All tho informations were dismissed. Inspector Cullen then asked to withdraw certain charges, but Mr. Swarbrick protested, stating that in fairness to his clients (ho other charges ought to be taken. Tho police had proceoded with cases which admitted of no defence beyond a flat denial by the accused. Four informations were then withdrawn. Kirwin pleaded guilty on six informations, and was fined £15 and SI Bs, costs to be paid in one month. Sheard also pleaded guilty on 10 informations. Fine:! £15 and £1 8s 6d costs. The information against Wiki and Raupautu was dismissed.
