RISE IN FREIGHTS.
[by TELEGRAM. association.] Wellington, Thursday. The trouble in the Transvaal and the transport of American troops to the Philippines are responsible for a rise in wool freights. There lias been an increased demand for tonnage for the transport of troops, provisions for their maintenance, and munitions of war. To-day's wool rates by steam are *d and fd, but agents will not book more than a few hundred bales. It seems almost certain that they will be |d and Id before the month is out. At Brisbane there is no steamer for the Junuftry ssles, the Duke of Fife having beep sent to San Francisco in ballast to take up charter to the Government of the United States, Agents are trying in all directions to get a steamer, and the best proposal that they have been able to obtain was on the basis of |d and Id and even then for 'only a limited amount of cargo. There has seldom been such a sudden" advance in freights on this side, but the withdrawal of so many steamers for South Africa and United States business has completely changed the position.
