ALLEGED ILLEGAL OPERATION
[CT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Thursday. At the Police Court to-day, before Mr. C. 1 C. Graham, S.M., Catherine Ashton was ] charged that on or about September 6 she i unlawfully used a certain instrument upon Ellen Sequin. Mr. Hanlon appeared for the defence, and Mr. J. F. M. Eraser for the prosecution. The evidence went to show that the girl, who is a domestic servant, con- j suited Price, a chemist, and was under treatment by him, that proving unsuccessful. 1 Price said he would see the woman about the , matter, and when the girl called again she j received the address of Mrs. Ashton. The 1 girl went to Mrs. Ashton, and on giving her £5 the operation was performed. The girl soon got about, but she afterwards became ill and went to the hospital, where the doctor found out what had taken place, and communicated with the police. Accused was committed for trial, and bail fixed at two sureties of £100 each. Alfred Price and Catherine Ashton were then charged with conspiring to commit a crime punishable by 1 hard labour for life. Mr. Fraser prosecuted and Mr. Solomon appeared for Price, and Mr. Hanlon for Mrs. Ashton. The evidence ; was much the same as in the previous case. The Magistrate said the matter was so serious that he would throw the responsibility on the Supreme Court. Accused were com- 1 mitted for trial. j
