ENTERTAINMENTS AND MEETINGS.

THE GAIETY COMPANY. The usual performance was given by the Gaiety Company at the City Hall last night, before a large and appreciative audience, the programme being given with spirit from beginning to end, hearty laughter alternating with frequent outbursts of applause. The last two nights of the Leslies, Mr. Caston, Messrs. Collins and Browne are announced, and a matinee performance will take place on Saturday afternoon, when "Waiting for the Train " will be given by the Leslie Bros., and Rayston and Rayford, and all the members of the company will appear as at night. New artists arrive on Sunday from Sydney. NO-LICENSE MEETING. At a meeting of the Onehunga Prohibition League, held 011 Wednesday afternoon, it was agreed to engage the services of Miss Hughes, of Mount Ellen, to lecture throughout the Manukau electorate in the interest of prohibition, and also to act as general secretary to the committees, which have been set up to carry no-license at the next election. HUNTLY SUNDAY-SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The Huntly Sunday-school held their annual tea meeting in Ralph's Hall. Notwithstanding the heavy rain, a number of children and grown-up people sat down to a good tea, which was well catered by Messrs. Glceson, who provided a variety of good tilings. ' After the tea Mr. Shaw, the superintendent of the school, called upon Mr. Nicholson to take the chair. The children sang several hymn selections with great credit both to themselves and their teachers. Mr. Ward spoke briefly upon the subject of Sun-day-school \vork and its advantages to the young, and also read a humorous sketch, Mrs. Cooke recited in her usual talented manner; Miss M. Gleeson, accompanied by her sister, sang very well; Mr. Cooke contributed a solo, " Angel-land," which he rendored with fooling and tas'ce. Later on he addressed a practical exhortation to those present upon the work in hand, humorously illustrating the details of his pointed and sensible remarks. Miss Johnson and Master Cooke respectively recited in good style; Mrs. Friar, with Miss Sopett, sang as a duet " He Wipes the Tear From Every Eye." This item was given with great expression, and was mu°h appreciated. After thanking the workers, Mcsdames Gleeson, Ward, McCaig, and others, the Chairman announced the closing hymn. Those interested in the Huntly Sun-day-school merit the thanks and good-wishes of the community for the bright, happy, and good work they arc doing.— Correspondent.] WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION. The Women's Christian Temperance Union met in the Central Mission Hall, Albertstreet, on Wednesday afternoon. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance Was not so good as usual. A committee was appointed for the open-air meetings, in order that they may be successfully carried on. Letters were received from Messrs.'G. Fowlds and Hobbs, accepting the invitation of the union to give addresses. It was resolved that Mr. Hobbs address the next meeting. Bishop Cowie's opening address to the Synod was discussed, and regret expressed at the views expressed by him re local option. Mesdames Main, Mitchell, and Daldy were also appointed to arrango with the Baud of Hope committee for a procession of children on polling day, through the streets, to sing temperance marching songs, and to display tenners with suitable mottos. FRANKLIN ROAD PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH SOIREE. The annual soiree in connection with the Franklin Road Primitive Methodist Church, was .held on Wednesday ovening. Although the weather was most unfavourable, there was a large attendance at the tea. The tables were gratuitously supplied, and were presided over by Mesdames Hodgson, Dimery, Savory, Rout, Dickens, Grigg, Shemilt, Sharp, and the Misses Ellison and Clemens. At the public meeting held afterwards, Mr. G. Fowlds occupied the chair, and kept the audience in good humour with his well-chosen remarks. Excellent addresses were delivered by the Revs. W. Laycock and W. S. Potter, Messrs. E. Williams, and T. Booth also briefly speaking. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Dimery, enlivened the proceedings with various anthems, including a duet from Mr. and Mrs. Ashworth, Mr. Ashworth presiding at the organ. The financial report, given by the Rev. J, Sharp, in the absence of the treasurer, showed that considerable progress had Keen made during the year. AVONDALE LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. The above society brought its 1899 session to a close with a social, given in the Avondale Public Hall, on Wednesday. There was a crowded attendance, Mr. R. B. Nesbitt occupying the chair. A splendid programme was provided, the following taking part, viz.: —Piano duet, Misses Perry; reading, "Up in a Balloon," Mr. Tait; trio, "Canadian Boat Song," Miss Harper, Sirs. Walker, and Mr. Haslain; reading, Mr. A. King; song, " One and All," Mr. Kennard; song, "Won't You Buy My Pretty Flowers?" Miss MoInJoe; reading, Mr. Nesbitt. In addition to the above, a good programme of . parlour games arid charades was indulged in, and much enjoyed by those present. At the close, refreshments were handed round by the ladies of the society.,
